Ruud Ouwehand (Amsterdam, 1958) is a Dutch jazz upright bass player, professor, music programmer and composer. He graduated in 1985 at the Hilversum Conservatory; with the majors upright bass and piano, “Lichte Muziek.”

After graduation Ouwehand started teaching upright bass, bass guitar, ear training, music harmony, combo coaching, and methodology at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Since 2016 Ouwehand is also Guest-Professor jazz upright bass at the University of the Arts of Bremen (DE).

Ruud Ouwehand is a frequently requested musician in the Dutch and international Jazz scene. Among others, he has performed with Ferdinand Povel, Theo Loevendie, Ack van Rooyen, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Piet Noordijk, Archie Shepp, Branford Marsalis, Hermine Deurloo, Jan Wessels, Peter Tiehuis, Philipp Catherine, Nedly Elstak, Greetje Kauffeld, Fay Claassen, Rivertown Jazzband, and many more.
Ouwehand played at music festivals all over the world; among other tours, he played in Moskou, Berlin, Lisboa, Paris, Antwerp and Indonesia. He also performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz at the Bouwmeester, Hoffestival, Kiel Jazz-Tage, and Jakart.

Together with the guitar player Peter Nieuwerf, Ruud and Peter were known as the ideal sidemen. Nieuwerf (1938-2015) performed with many great jazz musicians like Stéphane Grappelly, Nancy Wilson, Astrud Gilberto, Dizzy Gillespie, Toots Thielemans, and Stan Getz. In 2013 Ruud and Peter released a duo album titled Foolin’ Around. They also played many times with Bart van Lier, with whom they have recorded a live album in 2006, titled Live At The Tor.

Since 1990 Ruud is programming and playing in his own concert series in Jazzpodium De Tor, Enschede. These concerts are called: ‘Ruud Ouwehand ontmoet……’ (Ruud Ouwehand meets……) and over those years he has invited many great national and international jazz musicians. Since 2003, Ruud has been the main programmer for De Tor. For his work concerning promotion of jazz music in Enschede, he received the prestigious Golden Tor.

Between 1994 and 2003 Ouwehand was a member of The Armando Quartet. He played on the album The Violinist, which was crowned with an Edison Award in 1995.

Also was Ouwehand part of the Soesja Citroen band (Edison nomination in 2002), the Piet Noordijk New Quintet and the John Engels Quintet. Currently he plays regularly with the Masha Bijlsma Band.
